Tab Washers, Propshaft Bearing Carrier
The tab washer locks the threaded cover nut (retainer) into place.
After the cover nut is tightened to a torque of 220 ft. lbs the
tabs are bent. One tab will bend back into one of the cover nut notches.
The other tabs are bent forward.
Early MC-I, R, MR and Alpha One drives used the old style tab washer.
The tab washers only function was to lock the cover nut to keep it from
loosening and backing out.
The carriers for the early style housings used a small key to prevent
the entire propshaft bearing carrier from spinning in the gear housing.
The housings had a groove(key-way) to accept the key.
This was later changed and the key was no longer used.
Newer lower gear housings have no key-way.
Instead, the housing will have a hole to allow a tab from the
new style tab washers to extend into, thus preventing the
propshaft bearing carrier from spinning.
The new style tab washer now serves two functions. It locks the
cover nut from un-threading and backing out and it also prevents
the propshaft bearing acrrier from spinning in the gear housing.
